What a heat pump is

One system that heats and cools your home

Most San Jose homes run two machines: a gas furnace inside for winter and an AC outside for summer. A heat pump is one electric system that does both jobs.

The outdoor unit looks like an AC. It works as a pair with an indoor unit that takes the furnace's place. It doesn't burn anything. It moves heat from where you don't want it to where you do.

In summer

It pulls heat out of your rooms and pushes it outside, the same way an AC does. Your house cools down.

In winter

It runs the other way. It pulls heat from the outside air and moves it in. Even cold air holds heat, and our winters are mild, so it's easy work.

Why All-Pro

Owner-operated. Heat pump specialists.

All-Pro is a licensed, owner-operated HVAC company in San Jose. You deal directly with the people who run the company, from the first visit to the final inspection. Switching homes from gas to electric heat pumps is what we specialize in.

Carrier equipment

We install Carrier heat pumps, a brand with service and parts across the Bay Area. You get one known name, not whatever was on the truck.

You deal with the owner

The owner is on your project, not just on the sales call. Fast answers and honest recommendations, start to finish.

Sized to your home

We measure your rooms, windows and insulation before we pick a size. A system that's too big or too small costs more to run.

Rebates and permit handled

We reserve your rebate before install. We pull the permit and meet the city inspector. You sign, we do the paperwork.

Gas vs electric

A smarter way to heat and cool your home

A heat pump doesn't make heat by burning gas. It moves heat that's already there, so it gives you about 3 units of warmth for every 1 unit of electricity it uses. That's where the savings come from, in winter and in summer.

Example home

One year of heating, same home

Old gas furnace $900+ Gas, plus the electricity to run its blower fan
Carrier heat pump ~$700 On PG&E's Electric Home plan for heat pump homes

Lower heating costs, and the biggest savings come in summer.

How we got these numbers

  • The home burns 300 therms of gas a year for heat. At PG&E's $2.784 per therm, that's $835.
  • A furnace also runs an electric blower fan to push the warm air around, about 500 kWh a season. At 30¢ that adds about $150.
  • The heat pump delivers the same heat with about 2,344 kWh, since it makes 3 units of heat for each unit of electricity.
  • At 30¢ per kWh, the middle of PG&E's Electric Home (E-ELEC) winter price, that's about $700.

Why summer is where you save most

Your AC is usually the biggest electric bill of the year. A 15 to 20 year old AC uses a lot more power than a new heat pump to do the same cooling.

  • 15 to 20 year old ACAbout 10 SEER100%
  • New Carrier heat pump16+ SEER2About 60%

Electricity used for the same cooling. That's roughly a third off the cooling part of your summer bill, every summer.

Why it's a smart investment

One system, not two

You replace your furnace and your AC once, instead of paying for each when they wear out a few years apart.

Lower bills all year

Less to heat in winter and much less to cool in summer, and no more gas bill for heating.

Built to last

A heat pump typically lasts about 15 years, and Carrier backs it with a 10-year parts limited warranty when registered.

0% for 5 years

As low as $222 a month with no interest, so you pay back the price of the system and nothing more.

Rebates off the top

Up to $10,000 comes off the price in San Jose and the SVCE cities, so you finance less.

A home that's ready

Clean, quiet, all-electric heating and cooling, ahead of the Bay Area's new rules for gas furnaces.

Rebates by city

Get paid to switch from gas

Your rebate depends on who supplies your electricity, which depends on your city. Most rebates must be reserved before the install, so we apply first and install after.

Questions

Straight answers to fair questions

Still unsure? Ask us on the call. There's no cost and no obligation.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in winter?

Yes. San Jose rarely gets near freezing, and modern heat pumps keep heating well below that. What matters most is the right size for your home, which is why we measure before we quote.

Will my electric bill go up?

Your electric bill goes up in winter and your gas bill goes down. Overall, heating costs land close to gas, and cooling usually costs less with a new system. See the worked example above. We won't promise savings we can't guarantee.

What's the catch with 0% for 5 years?

There isn't one. It's 0% interest for 5 years, so you pay back the price of the system and nothing extra. It's on approved credit, and your exact monthly payment is in writing before you sign.

How much will mine cost?

It depends on your home's size, your ducts and the system it needs. Payments start as low as $222 a month on smaller systems. You get an exact price after the free visit.

Do I need new ducts or a new panel?

Most homes with a furnace and AC can reuse their ducts. Some electrical panels need an upgrade, most don't. We check both on the visit and put anything needed in your written price.

How long does the install take?

Most swaps take a day or two. In San Jose and the SVCE cities the rebate is approved first, which adds a few business days before install day.

My furnace still works. Should I wait?

Maybe. If it has good years left, we'll tell you. Many homeowners switch when the furnace or AC is 15 or more years old, so they choose the timing instead of replacing in an emergency.
